Only one of the six yearly tournaments is held in Osaka, so a visit often falls in a month without it. This guide lists what the Association schedules around the city in October, November and April, which shows keep running, and what the weather does.
Editorial team, osakasumo.top · Updated November 6, 2026 · Quick read: 6 min
Basics
Fukuoka in November, Nagoya in July and Osaka in March complete the six tournaments a year that JNTO counts, alongside the three in Tokyo.1 The Japan Sumo Association's schedule fills in the dates. After the March tournament at EDION Arena Osaka from March 14 to 28 in 2027, the Association lists Tokyo from May 9 to 23, IG Arena in July from July 11 to 25, Tokyo again from September 12 to 26 and Fukuoka from November 14 to 28.6,7,8,9,10
The same schedule shows what comes before the Osaka fortnight. The January 2027 tournament in Tokyo runs from January 10 to 24, with tickets from December 5, 2026.11 Osaka tickets are released on February 6, 2027, and the rankings for the March tournament come out on March 1.6 A trip planned for the weeks around the sale can shop for tickets and then arrive in a month when the hall itself is empty.
For a visitor based in Osaka, then, most of the year is a gap with nothing at the gymnasium. JNTO notes that because tournaments are limited in number, particularly outside Tokyo, it may be difficult for some people to attend one, and points to the Association's provincial tour as another way to see the sport.12 The rest of this page works through the months that matter and what is available in them. Each section ends where the practical choice begins, with a show or a tour stop you can put in the calendar.

Dates are those on the Japan Sumo Association's schedules; tour stops change from season to season.20
Searching for sumo in Osaka in October leads, on the Association's schedule, to a single day. The autumn tour listed Nagahama in Shiga on October 15, Kyoto on October 16, Osaka on October 17 and Himeji in Hyogo on October 18.13 The Osaka stop falls on a Saturday, which suits a short trip, and neighbouring stops in Kyoto and Hyogo give a second chance if the Osaka day does not fit.2
The Association describes what such a day holds: gates at 9:00 with a morning taiko drum, early training, bouts from 11:30, ring-entering ceremonies and top-division matches in the afternoon, and a closing ceremony after the final bout.15,16,17 Attractions that the Grand Tournaments do not carry, such as comic sumo and folk songs sung by the wrestlers, belong to these days.18 Treat these dates as a pattern; the Association decides each season's venues.
October weather in Osaka is gentle. The climate file for the site reads an average daily high of 22.7 °C and 110 mm of rain in the month.19 The rain falls over 7 days with at least 2.5 mm, and an outdoor tour stop is a sensible bet rather than a gamble, though a spare layer for the evening is cheap insurance.19
The November tournament is not in Osaka at all. The Association lists it at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center from November 8 to 22, 2026, and from November 14 to 28 in 2027.3,10 If you want a sumo trip in that month you can pair Osaka with Fukuoka, but sumo in Osaka in November means a show, not a tournament, and the weather is mild.
The average daily high in Osaka in November is 17.1 °C with 64 mm of rain, on a station comparison that the next section explains.19 Evenings turn cool enough that an indoor show or a hot-pot meal is a comfortable way to spend them. The Daito experience of the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau runs from mid-April to mid-December on one bureau page, so it is still open in November on that reading.22
Our Osaka Sumo Experience is a 1.5-hour show with retired wrestlers that does not depend on the tournament calendar. Its listing carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which keeps a plan flexible.

The spring tour started its Osaka days right after the March tournament. The Association lists Neyagawa in Osaka Prefecture on Monday March 30, the day after the ceremonial tournament at Ise Shrine.4 It continued to Kobe on March 31, Takarazuka on April 1, Yasu in Shiga on April 2 and Muko in Kyoto Prefecture on April 3.5
Anyone hunting for sumo in Osaka in April finds the tour in the region for a few days at the turn of the month. The weather is warming: the average daily high is 18.7 °C and the month brings 120 mm of rain over 8 days with at least 2.5 mm.19 The Daito experience begins in mid-April on the bureau page that gives a season.22
After the tour moves to eastern Japan, April has no tournament and no tour stop near Osaka in the Association's list that we checked. A show then does the work of a stage, and the listing details below show which ones run on set times.

Several listings do not depend on the calendar. The Sumo Hall Hirakuza show on the 8th floor of Namba Parks runs 2 hours, from $92, and is non-refundable. The Ochi Izumibeya listing offers shows at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM with chanko nabe in a shared pot, from $65.
A breakfast show at Osaka Sumo Kaminari Ichimon starts at 8:30 AM, 3 minutes on foot from JR Imamiya Station, with a sumo-style breakfast and an English-speaking MC, from $45. The hot-pot listing describes itself as a cultural entertainment program, not a Grand Sumo tournament.
Our own show meets in Hanazonocho and is divided into a 40-minute demonstration and match, a 30-minute challenge and a 20-minute talk. Whichever month brings you, the listing page's date picker is the source of truth for what is on: the records do not carry start times. That is also why this guide names no show dates: a date that was true when the page was written can be gone by the time you read it, and the booking widget shows the current ones.

In Japan, you can get up-close sumo experiences throughout the year. Aside from the Grand Sumo Tournaments, the Jungyo provincial tour travels to various locales in April, August, October, and December.
Planning
The site uses a blend of NOAA stations: rainfall read at the Osaka station 2.8 km from the show venue and temperatures at the Kobe station 26.2 km away, averaged over 1971 to 2020.19 The chart below uses the daily highs. Summer is hot: July averages 30.2 °C and August 32 °C, when outdoor tour stops are less attractive and the shows are a cooler choice.19,19
The tournament month is cool. March has an average daily high of 13.1 °C and 94 mm of rain, so bring a coat to the arena queue.19 December falls to 11.7 °C with 46 mm of rain.19
None of this changes the sumo calendar, which the Association sets, but it changes how you dress and how far you want to travel. A tour stop in a town like Yao or Katano in December is a winter outing, while a show in Namba is a warm room whatever the sky does.
