Finding the arena beside Namba Station

Visitors looking for Edion Arena Osaka sumo seats head for 3-4-36 Nambanaka in Naniwa-ku, the address the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau gives for the building.1 The Japan Sumo Association's schedule prints the venue as EDION Arena Osaka with Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium in brackets, and lists it for the March tournament in 2026, 2027 and 2028.5,4,6

The bureau's venue page counts the walk to the arena as 3 minutes from Osaka Metro Namba Station on the Midosuji Line, 3 minutes from Nankai Namba, 6 minutes from Kintetsu Namba and 10 minutes from JR Namba.3 A second bureau page speaks in rounder numbers: about 350 m from the Osaka Metro station, and 5 minutes on foot from Namba Station on the Midosuji and Nankai lines.7,8 The two pages differ slightly, so read them as the same short stroll rather than a timetable.

JNTO's page on the tournament gives one more direction that helps after you leave the Nankai station: the hall is within a five-minute walk, and you head west on the same street as the Osaka Namba Post Office.9 If you are asking where the Osaka sumo tournament is held, the answer is the center of the city, not a stadium on its edge: JNTO places the arena in the Namba district.2

A sports hall with an airplane hangar for a frame

The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau says the gymnasium was first built in 1952 using the framework of an airplane hangar, was renovated completely in 1985 and reopened in 1987 as a sports center.16 It is a hall for many sports. The same bureau page lists courts and dojos for volleyball, basketball, tennis, handball, badminton, table tennis, judo, kendo, gymnastics and boxing, plus a multipurpose hall and conference rooms.17

For sumo that matters a little, because the tournament is a guest in a building that lives a different life the rest of the year. JNTO says the arena seats approximately 10,000.2 By comparison, JNTO gives the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo a capacity of 11,098.18 As an Osaka sumo stadium it is a little smaller than the Tokyo home of the sport, though both figures come from JNTO and neither is a count of sumo seats on a given day.

The bureau also lists when the gymnasium shuts: the first Tuesday of every month, or the next day if that Tuesday is a public holiday, and from December 29 to January 3.19 None of this changes the March tournament, but it is worth knowing if you pass the building in another month and wonder why the doors are closed.4

The walk in

Minutes on foot to the arena from four Namba stations

  • Osaka Metro Namba3 minutes
  • Nankai Namba3 minutes
  • Kintetsu Namba6 minutes
  • JR Namba10 minutes

The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau's venue page gives these figures; a second bureau page rounds the Metro and Nankai walk to 5 minutes.3,8

How a bout day runs inside the hall

On JNTO's account, each tournament day in Osaka stretches from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM.10 For the 2026 tournament, Ticket Oosumo said the gymnasium opened its doors at 8:45, with a later opening of 10:30 on March 20 and 21 and 10:00 on the last day, March 22.12 Treat those door times as the 2026 pattern, not a promise for later years, and read the notice that comes with your own ticket.

Ticket Oosumo put the top division's main bouts at around 2 PM and said one ticket covers every match from morning to night.13 JNTO takes the other side of the day: for those with limited time, it suggests turning up around 15:00 to catch the top division, which it places between 15:30 and 18:00, and observes that the crowd grows as the afternoon wears on.14 The two sources agree that the later hours are the main event.

Leaving for lunch is allowed, within limits. Ticket Oosumo said guests can enter and exit at any time during the matches, though re-entry is allowed only once, and guests must be back by 17:00.15 The same page cautions against resale sites, and says a customer who loses a ticket is refused entry.25,26 Keep the ticket in a safe pocket, not in a bag you leave in the hotel.

The bureau counts 3 minutes on foot from that station.3

  • If My hotel is near Kintetsu Namba

    Walk from Kintetsu Namba

The bureau lists 6 minutes on foot.3

  • If I come in on a JR line

Allow extra time from JR Namba

The bureau lists 10 minutes, the longest walk among the stations it names.3

  • If I want dinner straight after

    Stay on foot in Namba

JNTO suggests eating and drinking in the surrounding area after the matches.24

Floor boxes, chairs and what they cost

A box seat means shoes off and a square cushion on the floor, with 4 guests to a box; boxes are sold whole.22 GO TOKYO's beginner guide finds floor seating a little tight by Western standards and suggests a table seat with chairs for a long day.31 If your knees dislike the floor, the chair seats are the answer.

For the 2026 March tournament Ticket Oosumo listed chair seats from 3,500 yen for class D up to 11,000 yen for class SS, each for one guest, tax included.20 Box seats for 4 guests ran from 34,000 yen on a weekday in class C to 60,000 yen on a weekend in class S.21 Ringside seats were 20,000 yen for one guest and sold only through the Japanese-language service.32 The table below sets the common classes side by side.

Children aged 4 or older need a ticket, and there is no children's discount.33 The English ticket service charged a fee of 2,000 yen per ticket in 2026, took credit cards only and printed tickets only at Seven-Eleven in Japan.23 Once bought, a ticket can be neither changed nor cancelled, whatever the reason, so confirm your dates before you press the button.26

    Matches begin

JNTO gives 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM as the daily span of the Osaka matches, and lists the early matches between up-and-comers among the things not to miss.10,11

  2. 8:45

    Doors on most 2026 days

Ticket Oosumo said the gymnasium opened at 8:45 for most of the 2026 tournament.12

  3. Around 2 PM

Around 2 PM is when Ticket Oosumo put the main top-division bouts.13

  4. 15:00

JNTO suggests arriving around 15:00 if time is short, to see the top division between 15:30 and 18:00.14

  5. 17:00

Under the rule Ticket Oosumo gave, a guest who had left once had to be back by 17:00.15

  6. 6:00 PM

    Day ends

JNTO gives 6:00 PM as the end of the daily matches.10

Eating and wandering in Namba after the last bout

JNTO calls Namba a hub of entertainment in Osaka and suggests exploring the surrounding area and eating and drinking after the matches.24 It also lists Namba City, Hozenji Temple, Hozenji Yokocho, Dotonbori and Denden Town as places near the tournament.34 Its page even says you may catch a glimpse of a yukata-clad wrestler walking the busy streets of Namba after a match.35

Dotonbori is right outside Namba Station, which the bureau serves with the Nankai and Kintetsu lines and the Midosuji, Sennichimae and Yotsubashi lines of the Osaka Metro.29 Hozenji Yokocho is a stone-paved alley 80 meters long and 3 meters wide, lined with kappo restaurants, bars, and okonomiyaki and skewered cutlet shops.30 Both sit on the map further down this page, close to the pins for the stations.

Namba Parks, directly connected to Nankai Namba Station, opened in October 2003 on the former site of Osaka Baseball Park and has a rooftop Parks Garden.28,27 It is also where the Sumo Hall Hirakuza show is staged, on the 8th floor. If the tournament is sold out, a show there is the nearest substitute to the arena, though the listing is a separate product with its own booking and a non-refundable rule.

When the arena is empty: the show in Hanazonocho

Outside March the gymnasium goes back to its everyday work as a sports hall, and a trip cannot always line up with tournament dates. Our own Osaka Sumo Experience is a different kind of outing. It meets at Sumo Studio Osaka on the first floor of the Hanazonocho AI Building, directly in front of Exit 4 of Hanazonocho Station, where staff wear a SUMOTORI shirt. The studio is in Nishinari-ku, south of the arena, on the third panel of the map below.

Expect 1.5 hours, a live guide speaking English and a group of up to 53. The itinerary lists a 40-minute demonstration and match, a 30-minute challenge and a 20-minute talk called What is Sumo. Retired wrestlers do the performing, and a few places are reserved for guests who want to face one in the ring.

It is an entertainment show with retired wrestlers, not a Grand Sumo tournament and not a stable's morning practice, and the Japan Sumo Association's schedule does not list it.5 The listing is from $62 and carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before. That makes it the flexible choice for a trip that cannot lock in tournament dates months ahead.
